Caribbean Christmas

 wearing a Santa hat ^

I went to the beach alone one last time before Tom was done with his finals and the tide was so high there was no dry sand. I am loving having Tom with me now at the beach and in the ocean! So much better with him.

 Big waves! Scary...

A guy named Ricky from England took these then made me get in the big scary waves. And I held a live sea urchin.

Advent calendar!

Card, socks, snow globe, santa and snowman window stickers, and small Christmas tree gifted to us from Grandma!

Tom and Santa

An interview with the guy who knows everything about Santa

Tom:  that guy looks like Santa with his read hair and beard
Me:    Santa doesn't have red hair, it's white
Tom:  the younger versions of Santa do
Me:    oh yeah, you're right. wow
Tom:  I know everything about Santa.
Me:    are you Santa?
(One of the tutors told Tom he looked like Santa Claus because he's growing out his beard)
Tom:  no
Me:    ok... what does Santa do all year?
Tom:  he vacations. he makes toys all year, duh
Me:    all by himself? does he have elves?
Tom:  yeah he has elves to help him and he tells them what to do
Me:    so he kind of has a company going
Tom:  yeah
Me:    is he really fat?
Tom:  no, he's just a big guy, really fit. he does have a belly
Me:    from eating cookies?
Tom:  yeah
Me:    how tall is he?
Tom:  6'3''
Me:    is your paramedic teacher, Brother Lewis, Santa?
Tom:  haha no
Me:    does he do crossfit?
Tom:  sometimes
Me:    is Santa married?
Tom:  duh
Me:    to who?
Tom:  Mrs. Claus, duh
Me:   does he have kids?
Tom:  yeah, well, he doesn't live forever. his son takes over, Chris Kringle (duuhhh)
Me:    how many kids does the current Santa have?
Tom:  five
Me:    what are their names? they can't all be named Chris Kringle
Tom:  no only the son that wants to take over the family business
Me:    ok how many girls, how many boys?
Tom:  two girls and three boys. the girls are Jeannie and Martha and the boys are Chris (i'm dying), Matthew and Igor. they're Danish
Me:    oh wow. what is Mrs. Claus's name?
Tom:  Martha
Me:    where is Santa's workshop?
Tom:  wouldn't you like to know. the north pole, duh!

While I'm laughing he is totally serious.

I told him I should have been writing this down so I could keep it but he told me that's against the rules. You can't write things down about Santa you just have to remember them. Then he promptly took a bite of his apple.

Other Funny Things Tom Has Said and Done that I can remember..

At dinner Tom was saying that he doesn't think we're adults yet. We're still in the young adults group. I said, "Yeah. Wait, you're 30." So he picked up his dinner plate to leave and said, "I'll show you what a 30 year old can do!" And walking away, "Clean his own plate off!"

We were talking about the Calls being in Hawaii and I said it was rainy and stormy one time when I was there. He asked me how many times I've been. Twice. Then he made a face like "I've never been to Hawaii and you've been twice!" so I said, "You've been to Japan.." To which he replied, "Once!" For two years.. not to mention we're now living on an island.

In the library I saw a girl walking down the aisle next to Tom's seat. I saw her stop before passing us with a face like she had just been surprised by something scary. Then she turned around and took a different path and I heard Tom say sorry. ??? He had thrown a millipede right in front of her! It was climbing on his desk. He went to get some paper to pick it up and throw it away after. Good boy. :)

On the first day of Christmas...

It's finally December. Now I will listen to Christmas music everyday to help it feel a little more like Christmas here. Trans-Siberian Orchestra! Woo!

I made Tom an advent calendar! I'm glad I thought of it. Hopefully it will give him a little something extra to be excited about during this very stressful time.

Day 1 is fudge! Yum! I was craving chocolate. ;)
The fudge ingredients were provided by none other than my awesome grandma! Thank you Grandma!

Thanksgiving Pizza

Tonight we had pizza for dinner. I had asked the guy that works in the bookstore on campus where I could get a pizza and he said Rick's Cafe was the best.

I caught the 4:50 bus out to the gas station to catch the Mont Tout bus to Food Fair where the pizza is but the Mont Tout bus doesn't stop there. Nope. No big deal. I caught a city bus.

The bus didn't go straight toward St. George's but instead went around IGA and I got to see the Payless Shoe Store that's being set up. Cool! But sometimes these buses wait around for people to come out and need them even with 7 people already in there waiting to go. Whatever.

Finally at Food Fair I found Rick's Cafe. $33EC for a medium cheese pizza. $5EC extra for each topping. Ok. While I was reading that, the cashier was reading my shirt giving me the stink eye then she told her friend to read my shirt too so they could both have a little laugh together. ?? It says, "Not all who wander are lost." I'm guessing they don't know Tolkien.

Ordered, took my order to the pizza people. 15 minutes he says. Okay. So I went to a cool shop next door with some fun little things. Good ideas on things to make and nice little coconut spoons and green rock rings.. Not jade but she didn't know what they were made from.  Back to the pizza guys. A nice guy came out to see my number, said ok, then went back. Do I go to the window to get my pizza when I think it's ready? So after over 20 minutes I did and he said a little bit longer. 10 minutes or more longer and I had my pizza. At least I had some Sia while waiting. One two three, one two three, drink.

Right when I walk outside I am attacked by mosquitoes! Good thing the chikungunya virus isn't around. But what about dengue?? Ugh.

A bus pulls up full but one person gets out and I can squeeze in. Yay...

Again I picked a bad bus that went off the usual path and we turn down a weird road for a bit. Ok. I ask if we're going back in case this was a different way into St. Georges. We are. I had to get out a few times to let people sitting next to me out. Crazy.

Finally we were on my street so I pay the guy. Bad idea. They don't take me the whole way to my hill. Calliste is written on their windshield! The money guy got out and said we were there and I told him I'm going to Calliste. Then he said something about last junction blah blah blah. No. "So you're not going to take me the whole way?" Ok.............. Now I've had it. I shouldn't have paid him until I was there.

It's 6:15, already dark out, I'm holding a pizza box that's falling apart, too hot to touch the bottom of it, and I'm getting eaten by bugs that could kill me! Not really but get me sick! Now I have to speed walk home.

My sweat, blood and tears went into getting our Thanksgiving dinner. Sweaty bus rides and walk home, blood being sucked by mosquitoes and I had a good little cry when I got home. Fun.

I'm not complaining, I'm over it now. I just thought it was a funny little story about our awesome Thanksgiving meal. Also, I am the only white person this whole trip. So I'm getting stares and experiencing what it is like to be the minority.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Next time, I'm bringing Tom.
